Fun Family Day

Monday was our second year in Canada celebrating Family Day. It is a day in celebration of family and doing things together. For a number of years there was discussion that we needed one holiday between Christmas and Easter to ward off the winter blues. Thus we have Family Day. Department and grocery stores were closed as well as schools and provincial government offices. I spent the day with my eldest son Geoff, granddaughter Madeline and Kiley and Austin.

We played a couple of hours in the Aurora Town Park and watched ice sculpting. It took 3 hours and 3 blocks of ice to make this much of the figure skater. Amazing...

Watched dog sled rides (line ups were too long for us to participate)

Frozen sheets of ice that held Gold awards on a rope were cut into blocks with a chainsaw....

and given to the children including Austin and Madeline...

Madeline caught a fish in the Fish Pond....

We watched igloo building....sampled food....

The highlight for me was when we drove to Aurora's Cultural Centre. The kids did some crafts first and then upstairs 5 original members of the Lion King performed for an elite group of about 70 people. Even the pianist was from the original cast.

They were not in costume but took us through the whole musical singing songs as they told the tale. We loved it! The acoustics in the building were wonderful. They explained they had not rehearsed or song these songs together for 6.5 years and they were truly excited themselves at how well they were doing. I took some digitals of the songs and stories.

Warmed up by the Lion King we drove to another park for tobaggoning. The kids had so much fun. There was an outdoor rink full of skaters also. The snow we have is from around Christmas. We haven't had much since then but because its cold it just stays and looks pretty.

Our final Family Day event was dinner at East Side Marios where kids ate free for Family Day. A great day...yeah for Family Day!!

Hope your week is great so far too... Judi xoxo

Hi Judi! Oh, how marvelous. I wish we had that holiday here in the states! Sounds like you all had a great day! Love seeing the pictures of the little ones. Oh, we saw the Lion King in New York a few years back and it was wonderful. How special to see some of the orginal cast members.
Oh, my friend was visiting funeral homes to take orders and sell those cowboy caskets.
be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Hi Judi, your family day sounds so wonderful. I love that holiday. What could be better than playing with our family. The little ice gifts were so cute. The Lion King cast entertainment is awesome. All in all a wonderful day. I love your photos.

No, I do not have the photos framed. A great idea though. This post was a spur of the moment idea. I am glad it is so well received.

Hugs, Jeanne
