What Is This??

Recently I found this while thrifting and I had to buy it. Only thing is
I'm not sure what kind of clam thingy it is?
The flash is "flashing" up the exterior and its making some marks look
more evident than they really are in real life. The interior is really
shiny and has this removable glass clam thingy.
Marc thought it was a cigarette butler and I thought maybe it would hold
some butter at the table. Whatever it is I think thats what I'll use it for, or for
mints if we wanted to start passing them around at the table..*g*...
Can you help me identify what it is?
Whatever it is...I hope you have a lovely day.... Judi xoxo

I'm leaning towards the butter or maybe jam or something like that. With the glass plate being removable and the rest of it closing, my guess would be it held something that you would keep open on the table and then put back in it's clam covered up when you were finished. I could be completely wrong lol Whatever it is, it's just lovely Judi. Great find! *Big hugs*

It's very pretty Judi. How big is it? I agree that it might hold something that could be taken out and refrigerated. Let us know when you have the answer to the mystery.

Lorrie
The outside of the clam is about
5" at each of the longest sides and the white clam inside is 4".
It isn't very high. Whatever goes in there couldn't be TOO high.

Thank you Kathy and Lorrie for those suggestions...lets see what the consensus is...

I believe it's a crumb butler. It would have a glass lining so that it could be easily cleaned without ruining the silver finish.

I have no clue since I have never seen on of those before. Sally mentioned crumb butler. I don't know what that is either. But my guess is crumb butler is used to hold the crumbs scraped off the table. Actually that idea makes total sense to me. Now I have a copper gadget I have wondered about. It opens like your clam does. Hmmm...

Judi, I'm pretty sure it's a butter holder. Butter curls would look very nice in this, don't you think? And the glass insert makes it possible to refrigerate the butter prior to serving.

It wouldn't be a crumb butler because there is not a brush with it and I have one and it's more flat to fit under the table while catching crumbs.

Blessings,

Sher

it's a butter dish. I have a silver one just like it that I bought years ago in a china and dish/gift shop.
forgot all about it until now!

Judi, I made those e. last night and they were the best I've ever eaten. What a GREAT recipe little miss NoteSongs gave us! My hubby was so so loving it all...
I will post about it a little later on a Foodie Friday as mine were a tad bit different...not much but I used a lot of fat free ingredients in mine (both of us have to watch that fat..high colestrol)!
Now, I have no idea what this pretty thing you are showing us might be. I've seen them a lot but never knew what they were for.
My first thought is what we called a Silent Butler but they always had a little brush attached.... Butter dish sounds pretty good but...just not sure.

I was actually thinking maybe it would hold sugar cubes for a fancy tea...but it sounds like one of your commenters knows it is for butter for sure! What a great find!!!

Gosh Judi, I should know what it is. I think your dh is correct. I love anything that has a shell motif. check e-bay by describing what it looks like. You might come up with something. Let us know.
