Loonies and Toonies

Marc and I talk about the difference in the American and Canadian appearance. While the US bills are much the same colour the Canadian money as I tell Marc is "colour coded". Each bill is a distinct different colour. The $5.00 bill is blue, the $10.00 is purple etc. Easy peeeesy...

Do you know we don't have bills for $1.o0 and $2.00 any longer? We haven't for some time. We have a large coin for each about the size of a silver dollar. The $1.00 coin has a loon on it. We have loons on most of our lakes so I guess its a favourite bird, water bird anyway. Therefore EVERYONE knows the $1.00 coin as a "Loonie". You don't say "do you have a dollar?" You say "do you have a loonie?"
Our $2.00 coin has a polar bear on it. I don't know exactly why that bear was chosen. It makes it sound indeed like we all live in igloos and have polar bears cruising around the igloo. I remember when they had a contest deciding what would be put on the $2.00 coin. At any rate it is only fair that it is officially called a "Toonie". It rhymes with Loonie and it is "two" dollars.
A typical conversation we all have at some point is... "I have a toonie can you give me 2 loonies". So if you come visiting to Canada you now know the money lingo.... Love Judi xoxo

Morning, Judi! Oh, this is fun. Mr. Precious would love this post - he collects coins and I know he has some Canadian ones, but probably doesn't know this! Thanks for popping in and hope all is well with you.

When my kids were younger they use to love getting Loonies when hubby would come back from business trips to Canada. We don't live far away from Canada at all so a lot of the smaller Canadian change is often given as change here in MI.

Have a great day!

Judi, I never thought about it, but of course it would be less confusing if our bills were different colors. The Canadian coins are so pretty, and their nick-names are so fun. Thank you for a really interesting post. laurie
